A beginner painting collector from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, for example, bought an Indonesian painting for only Rp 3,500,000 (about US$ 400.00) in 2006. About one year later, he managed to sell it for Rp 15,000,000 (abut US$ 1,700.00), pocketing over 400 per cent of profit! What he purchased was a painting of good quality by a rising artist.

Another true story. A painting trader who also is a collector, purchased an oil painting from a friend who was desperately in need of money. Only 3 months later, a buyer stopped by and became very interested with the painting. He asked if he could trade his brand new car (worth about Rp 120 million) with the painting. It was obviously an offer that was hard to resist. So they made the deal. I know it's hard to believe but it actually happened.

Choosing a good potential paintings really takes many complex factors, such as the artist's reputation, people's prediction on his/her future, the quality of his works, style uniqueness, and many others. Sometimes, unexplained instinct also plays important role in choosing paintings. Luck factor, last but not least, may also interfere.

Well, there are paintings that remain a picture for wall decoration and not more, and there are (fewer) ones that turn to be masterpieces of art.
