Confused in Choosing Your Oil Painting Supplies?
Here's a Guide For Beginners

I started my first painting about 10 years ago. I recall the day I went to the art supplies store in my town. As a beginner, I was in total confusion when I had to choose the things I needed. There were too many things that I did not know which one to buy.

You know, this store had every tube of paint a man could want. And the brushes and the canvases. Fortunately, a shop assistant came and helped me find the things I needed. Thirty minutes later, I came out of the store with a bag full of painting supplies, a half of them were things that I did not have any idea what they were for.

That was a story of how a beginner wasted money for supplies he did not need. If I had known what I needed, I could have saved lot of money. I hope this won't happen with you, fellow beginners.

This is what I should say to you. When you decide to start painting, you shouldn't go overboard on supplies. I recommend that you start with the basic. Then, when you become more experienced, you can experiment with different kinds of supplies, until you find ones that are most suitable to your painting style.

Here are some hints of painting supplies that you might want to understand more

Paint Brushes

Brushes are available in many sizes and shapes, from flat brush to the round one. They are also, of course, available in many different prices. Brushes are very important in determining quality of your painting, so you should definitely spend a bit extra money to choose only the good quality.

According to my experiences, cheap brushes will only cause you more headaches, because they would lose the shape very quickly. Because of their poor quality, they would leave hairs on your painting. And this you don't want to happen, do you?

Choose brushes that suit your type of painting, whether you are going to paint landscape, portrait or impasto works. Each of them requires different types of brushes. By experience, you would be able to choose the right brushes and develop your own style. But as a starter, I would recommend that you buy a few flat brushes of various sizes, a few small rounds for details, and a fan for blending. Do not forget to buy good brush cleaner and preserver. I recommend the Marx Brush Care System for cleaning and preserving brushes. I use it myself and I am quite satisfied with it.

Oil Paints

Just like brushes, there are many variations of oil paint according to its price and quality. And you can find some very good paints on the market today. I like to work with Grumbacher Artist Oils, but Winsor & Newton oil paints are also very popular, and many painters use them.

Additionally, there are some different grades of paint, such as student grade paints and professional grades.

As for me. I like to work with the professional grades, because they give more brilliant colours than the student grade paints. But I think it' is allright for a beginner to purchase a lower quality paint for learning and experimentation. I guarantee that once you try the professional grade paints, you will never return to the student grade. Of course, this is my personal opinion. Artists have different preferences for colours. Some would prefer a limited palette of only a few colors, while others prefer to have a variety of different colors at their disposal.

For your guidance, I am listing below the colors of my palette. But it really depends on your own preference. These are my favourite, but I might change along the way, depending on the result that I woud like to achieve.

Cadmium Yellow Light
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red Light
Cadmium Orange
Burnt Sienna
Raw Sienna
Burnt Umber
Alizarin Crimson
Sap Green
Thalo Blue
Ivory Black
Titanium White

Oil Painting Mediums

Medium for oil paintings varies greatly from artist to artist. Every artist must have his or her own mixtures and formulas according to their preferences. I myself prefer linseed and poppy oil. Linseed oil gives a tendency to yellow the colors so I do not have to mix it with my lighter color mixtures. For lighter color mixtures, I use poppy oil as it has less of a tendency to yellow. You can find several other mediums available in art supply stores, but I recommend that , at first, try the medium that is recommended by more experienced artists, until you find something ones that can give best result that you are seeking.

Canvas and Other Supports

The most popular support that many artists usually use is cotton canvas, but there are other supports available. For example. There are linen canvas, boards and canvas paper. You might also try rolled canvas and stretch it yourself as you desire. This again is something you have to experiment with until you find a support that works best with your style of painting.

I recommend that you start with a small or medium sized canvases. I would prefer FREDRIX Red Label Stretched Cotton Canvas to work with. While Red Label is a medium textured quality canvas that is very good for use with oils. It has been a popular choice amongst oil painters.

Palette
Palettes are made from various materials including glass, wood, plastic, and even paper. I choose the BOB ROSS Clear Palette to work with. In my opinion, this palette is excellent. It's easy to clean, holds a lot of paint with adequate room to mix your colors. The price is also reasonable for the quality it renders.

Easels
You can find easels with many different sizes and price ranges. Choose one that can provide good stability to paint on; otherwise your canvas will wobble around when you paint and this can be very annoying. Before buying an easels, you also need to decide whether you will be painting primarily in your studio or in an outdoor setting. If you want to paint outside the studio, consider to purchase a French easel. The JACK RICHESON Academy Verona Half French Easel is a good buy.

There are many easels to choose from If you work primarily in your studio. For me. I would prefer a STANRITE 500 Classic Aluminum Easel. It's an excellent easel that is light in weight but sturdy. It sets up easily and can be folded for easy transport.

Well that’s all I can share with you. I truly hope this article can help you, especially the beginners, to choose just the right supplies for your painting works. Enjoy your painting creation, and God Bless you!
